It goes pretty much without saying that, once you’re a mum, your social life changes somewhat. Spontaneous nights out become a thing of the past, now you have babies/children to feed, put to bed, organise a babysitter for. Drinking heavily into the wee small hours is no longer a great idea, not now that the wee small hours is precisely when you’re likely to be woken up by a demand for Cheerios and Peppa. Besides, a hangover hardly bears thinking about when you have noisy little dictators to manage in the morning, AND will sacrificing several hours of (potential) sleep be worth it, given your cumulative sleep deficit?
However, it’s nice, once in a while, to feel like you do have a life outside of “being a mum”. My friends and I occasionally decide to get together for drinks/dinner in the vain hope that we can have a conversation that doesn’t revolve entirely around sore nipples, toddler poo and pelvic floors… It usually takes weeks, and several postponements, to actually get out, and when we do, it’s never quite as wild as we imagined…
…We’re usually yawning by 10pm and secretly hoping that someone else will want to bail first. MY GOD everyone is so young these days! Young and pert. I’m not a particularly old mother, but deary me, I feel like a right old hag compared to some of these nubile young things – I had no idea the drinking age had been lowered to 12…
Having said all of that, you gotta do it, mums! Get out there! I know not everyone has the opportunity, but if you have someone (anyone) who could watch the babies once they’re tucked up in bed, slap on some mascara and squeeze into your skinny jeans. Grab a girlfriend, get back on the horse and leave the bloody house post-7pm – it’s fun really, I promise 😉
I still have the FEAR!! Love the drawings. Have thought all of the above except I have given up silly shoes totally.
Oh yes the silly shoes, I never learn. I still have the fear of being first to bail too. ⭐️
Brilliant! Again! So true but you have to ignore all of this and just do it – and do not talk about the kids! DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE KIDS! #BigPinkLink
I’ve been out in the evening exactly once in the past 11 months – I’m long overdue a night out! It’s really hard with a baby who is going through separation anxiety, though – she only wants mummy when she wakes up at night, I WILL make it out at some point, but will be in bed by 10 for sure. #bibpinklink
Ah this so would be me…..knackered by 10pm, feet killing, and needing a seat. Claire x #bigpinklink
Oh, I love a night out! It’s such a rare occasion I hype it up beyond belief! Although heels have long been abandoned, and it’s likely I’ll be heading home come 10 o’clock… #bigpinklink
You’re spot on when you say you’ve got to get out there! Mother had a night out on the town recently – getting ready was stressful and she worried about missing me but once she was out – woooohooooo! #bigpinklink
Brilliant! Oh the shoes…that’s the worst bit. I can’t cope in nice shoes any more it makes me sad. I keep thinking I should practice but how impractical trying to make a cardboard house wearing heels!? #bigpinklink
I agree! It’s too easy to get into a rut of never leaving the house in the evening. I usually put my pj bottoms on when I get through the door and that’s me done then!! Worth it when I do make the effort….although sometimes the excitement, (and booze!), can go to my head and I get carried away. I definitely regret that in the morning! 😀
Totally agree. I really must get out more…I love going out with the girls and we always have an amazing time. It’s like we go back in time… (not always a good thing)
Sometimes though, all those thoughts that you sketched do cross my mind but as soon as I’m with the girls they go out of the window. #triballove
Pahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!! 100% me. “Yes! I’m going out!!!” then as the time comes, “god I’m too old for this shit and I want to put my fat pants on and go to bed!” 🙂
Shared and loved.xx
Hah! I still love going out but like your doodle, I want to be preferably sitting down and comfortable (God I sound OLD!!) I always find I get a bit overexcited at being out and end up drinking too much. Then have to suffer the consequences the next day. Which can be HELL!! #BigPinkLink x
Seriously though why did they take the stools away from bars, WHY? Is this discourage Mothers like ourselves?? Or is it a cunning ploy to make us drink more to forget about the pain from wearing inappropriate heels? I love the idea of going out but I always seem to peak to early and need by bed by 10pm. I am so rock and roll #PuddingLove
Hahaha! This is me every time I go out. Occasionally I’ll get over excited & drink too quickly & get blottoed, but usually I’m home in bed by 10! #fortheloveofBLOG
I just had my first night out since having my baby and even though I kept checking my phone, was the first to go home and she was awake and overtired watching YouTube videos with her father when I got home, had the best time and it was really worth it. And me and my new mum friends even talked about something other than our children! #fortheloveofBLOG
My kids are 10 and 17 and for me a good Saturday night is watching telly with my hubby. I just don’t have the energy for going out now. I do meet up every month or so with some ladies I used to work with, we are always home by 10 lol. Most of my meet ups with friends are in a coffee shop somewhere now.

I don’t understand how some can stand there in high heels for hours on end. I end up needing a seat after just a few minutes standing in flats.
LOVE that picture. The line about seats ha HA!! I’m an ‘older’ mum well past the baby stage and lucky to have a group of girls that are v social. And let’s just say I erm have come home as the birds were singing on a few occasions and (don’t ask me how) but my hangover isn’t crazy. Shoot me. One day you’ll get there. Hard to believe when you’re shoulder deep in vom and sore nipples but trust me! Love this post…did I mention the picture? 🙂 #BigPinkLink
I tried to have a meal out on Monday, I went at 6pm and back by 9pm, does that count? I was only back by then because I got a text asking me when I was coming back at 8.30 saying the baby wants me! Hmmm, I need to rethink my timings and try again another time once he’s asleep! For now I can cope staying in! #fortheloveofblog
Haha brilliant!! I’m not even a mother, and I look around the club and say who let the 12-year-olds in? 😂
I’m also super happy, because the alt text worked! Thank you for your descriptions! I really appreciate it! 😽😍❤️ Xxx #BigPinkLink #TribalLove
The drawings are fab. To be honest this is one of the reasons why I love being a parent that has seperated from her ex…I can’t really say single parent as I have a partner…I don’t know what I am really, but I digress…because she visits her dad and his family I have time to myself, time to go out, time to go swimming, and time to spend with my partner too. I have no idea what will happen if we decide to have children but now I’m a lot closer to family I guess I will just hand them over from time to time! #fortheloveofblog
This will be me this week! I have persuaded Hubby to watch kids for the evening while I force myself out of the house for a birthday drink with my girlfriends. Because nothing screams birthday quite like a mocktail (driving) and being back home by 9.30pm ha ha. I can’t guarantee I will shave my legs, but the unknown baby vomit down my back will inevitably be there! Thanks for sharing, love it as always #PuddingLove
I love your posts as ever. Its funny it was only 18 months ago I was going out partying and clubbing until 3am. Now, I am lucky to make it past 10pm and have not even attempted to go out out!

Whenever me and my husband goes out for dinner and drinks (while we have a babysitter for my 2 year old) I am almost always ready to go home and go to sleep at 10 pm…he he.. And I am only 33 😛

This is so me! I’m usually in silly shoes, yawning and sporting the baby sick just for good measure! Love your drawings 🙂
#fortheloveofBLOG
Well timed for me! Had my first post-baby night out on Saturday and although it was fun, I definitely thought everyone looked way too young, I wore stupidly painful but gorgeous shoes and I was tucked up at home by midnight like Cinderella. Shameful lol. Great drawing by the way! Thanks for sharing this with us on #fortheloveofBLOG x
Glad it’s not just me that feels like everyone has got younger. I actually looked at few girls last time I was out and all I could think was ‘they must be cold with no tights on ‘
this sums it up perfectly! It feels awkward, and we’re not really full of energy, but it is always worth it! #fortheloveofBLOG
Oh, SUCH a good pic. This was me on Friday night. I went out for the second ever time since NC was born and was so tired/in pain from inappropriate footwear/uncomfortable. But overall I had a lovely time so you’re right – you’ve got to get out there! #PuddingLove
I love the recklessness post 3 drinks when you’re like ‘going to a club and pulling an all nighters is totally a good idea’. Not so much the 5am retching whilst watching Frozen. Again.
absolutley!! we HAVE to get out!! even if our feet do hurt and we feel old lol – it HAS to happen #puddinglove
Wahoooo! Let’s go out…oh wait I’ve got my jammies on and I’m in bed before 9pm! I’d be the one on the left that’s gone through a pack of razer blades trying to do my annual leg shave. Love it!
#puddinglove #triballove
The friends I usually (I use the word “usually” lightly here. I have good friends, but none of them live in the same city) go out with actually don’t have kids, so I am the only one being the mummy with the baby sick! Luckily, I don’t go out much, due to having zero friends within a hundred mile radius! #puddinglove
Oh i totally relate to this post! I am one of those yawning and wanting to go home to bed lol! Having said that i am out tonight and tomorrow night for celebrations eeek! I am going to suffer this weekend and will have to rely on Mr B for help lol! Thanks for linking up to #puddinglove
Popping back from #PuddingLove – I did manage to stay out past 10pm for my night out, but only had one half of cider, as I just can’t drink anymore! Thanks for linking always love to have you join us x
[…] The Adventures of a Beta Mummy The Mum’s Night Out […]
So glad I found this via #BlogStars – brilliant post, the picture says it all really. Oh God and all the shiny young things with their perky bits and airbrushed faces – tooooooooo depressing! I have a – wait for it – Mum’s WEEKEND coming up! I know, very exciting. We will all either be hammered before we get off the plane or in our hotel rooms with a cuppa by 9pm. 🙂
Bloody hell – a whole weekend?! I’d need a fortnight to recover afterwards! I predict that you’ll all be hammered the first night, then in bed with tea the second night 😉 Have fun! x
I’ll let you know, but that is very likely, nursing blisters from my ridiculous heels (must remember – pack plasters!) Thanks x

As a mother to 11, I found this post hilarious. I honestly don’t remember going out with friends for at least 10 years, and my mother-in-law was with me…does that count? I love the drawing. That ‘shaved legs’ thing is so me. Visiting from #KCACOLS!
11?! *faints*
Thanks for dropping by 🙂
Ha ha – you said ‘nubile’! *tittles to self cos it sounds rude!*
I love the fact she shaved her legs in the pic-brilliant!
Definitely true tho-take every opportunity you can get to feel like a normal person if even just for a few hours. #KCACOLS
Ahh popping back again! This put a big smile on my face 🙂 Love it #KCACOLS
Lowered the drinking age to 12…hahaha that is so the way it feels, and the bed by 10 lol I am glad I am not alone there. #KCACOLS
haha absolutely feel like that sometimes! Great post as usual. Hope you were not too hangover, just kidding! #KCACOLS
Oh god your right! I had one last month. We where sat by the bar (it was mega busy) had a few cocktails that we all weren’t sure of then went to a club and all felt awkward for 2 hours till we gave up and called it a night!! Argh! When did I get so old?! And when did shaving my legs become a luxury?! #KCACOLS
