The world of blogging and social media loves a recipe – Pinterest goes mad for the bloody things. A quick google search for “meat pie recipe” returned 3,910,000 results….wow. So anyway, I decided to join the merry recipe bandwagon, and feature some extremely special Beta Mummy recipes on my website.
I’m going to kick off with my recipe for cheese on toast. Some of you may not think that something as humble as cheese on toast warrants a recipe…in that case then I suspect you are not a true Beta Mummy – when it comes to cooking at least!
BETA MUMMY’S CHEESE ON TOAST RECIPE:
- Pick small bits of mould off bread, and make mental note to add bread to the shopping list.
- Toast bread on the grill, on one side.
- Turn over, and shove some cheese on untoasted side. The ready grated cheese is particularly handy, I’ve found, because it tastes foul and therefore I’m unlikely to snack on it (little dieting tip there – you’re welcome).
- Stick under grill.
- Get distracted and only remember about it when the smoke alarm goes off.
- Flap tea towel at smoke alarm whilst attempting to console hysterical children.
- Extract burnt cheesy toast and debate whether or not you can get away with scraping off the burnt bits and camouflaging it with some additional cheese.
- Sigh loudly, chuck it in the bin and start again.
- This time, stand next to grill and watch like a hawk.
- Ta daaaaaah.
Scoff the lot before it even touches a plate.

Haha I love this! Confirmed beta mummy right here…I’ve even picked off the mouldy bits with my stepson as I was making him cheese on toast. Good tip re pre-grated cheese too, nothing like snacking on freshly grated cheddar hmmm. Fab work Beta Mummy xx
Why thank you! So glad it’s not just me that picks mould off…! 😉
You forgot tomato ketchup 😉 best hangover cure EVER!
Ew, no, not with cheese on toast. Lee & Perrins all the way! 😉
No HP Brown Sauce!
This was great! I’ve never thought to use grated cheese. I always use sandwich sliced kind. Loved the post!#TribalLove
Love it! More please. I think we’ve got this recipe thing nailed. Pinterest is mad for this stuff. #tribe
When are you appearing on Master Chef?
This post speaks to me. It’s like you’ve seen me cook before…

What a lovely treat to find one of my favs before me on the #KCACOLS linky to comment on. I love cheese on toast but currently can’t eat dairy so it’s on my miss list. Cathedral city all the way though. 🙂
Lol brilliant!! This is my favourite blog recipe ever. Cheese on toast is a bit much for me though…I can’t messing around with a grill…beans can be done in microwave, therefore beans on toast wins everytime. Though cheese is easier to get out of my hair when it’s inevitably chucked at me by my kids! #KCACOLS
Lol, better yet get your husband to make? Who am I kidding his ads is superglue to the sofa #KCACOLS
This is amazing dinner! You can’t go wrong with cheese. Full stop. My fave dinner is cheesy rice with peas. Just for me. The kids refuse to eat it, as does the husband. They claim it looks like baby food. Rude #KCAOCLS
I am afraid I think you may have plagarised this recipe from me. I’ll let you off, as long as you promise to share the glory and proceeds 😉 This did make me laugh. PS There is NO KIND OF CHEESE that I will not snack on. Unfortunately. Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday
What a funny post. I had a right good chuckle whilst reading. Particularly relatable with step 5! #kcacols
Amazing! Very funny, but also rich in the kind of details that will enable us Gamma mummies to imitate your mad cheffing skills.
I look forward to your cookery book, which will be published in time for Christmas I hope?

HAHAHAHA! This is fantastic! Flapping the tea towel. Yup that’s me! #KCACOLS
Hahah I’ve done that! I pick the mouldy bits off read before my husband sees otherwise he’d throw the whole pan out! Its kinda ok to eat right? #KCACOLS
Love this! I find I’m always picking mould off the bread. Great skills to make cheese on toast! xx
#KCACOLS
Ahh it’s the simple things isn’t it? 🙂
That pre-grated stuff is like sawdust isn’t it- blimmin STINKS too!!!
Luckilly for me I quite like the burnt bits 🙂
#ablogginggoodtime
Gah when the bread burns and you KNOW he’s going to reject it but you scrape the burnt off and serve it anyway. To much nose turning up! Ahhh motherhood #ablogginggoodtime
what is it with that pre-grated stuff? homemade grated is so much better, alas it requires far too much in the way of effort. I am so beta i often forget to toast the other side and so end up with a limp and soggy bottom. #ablogginggoodtime
I always burn the first lot! 😀 #ablogginggoodtime
Finally! A recipe that I think I can manage! I even have all of the ingredients!! (Very excited about this as usually I have around 3 of the 27 ingredients required and bugger along with it anyway swapping “passata” for ketchup etc etc). I am on this one! Boom! 😉 xx
PS: I am also a lover of the pre-grated stuff, however my Mum keeps telling me just to grate a block of (far cheaper and tastier) stuff and stick it straight in the freezer. When you need a handful just take it straight from freezer and it apparently thaws in a few mins? Also stops the snacking. It sounds like a flippin marvellous idea to me. Still haven’t tried it obvs as it still seems like a bit too much work but ya know… 😉

Now there’s an Alpha Mum solution! 😉
This really made me laugh hun as it sounds like the speech my brother’s best man made at his wedding, in it he described Dave’s guide to making cheese on toast and it was scarily similar… Although he normally drops it on the floor getting out of the grill too! Thank you for linking up to #ablogginggoodtime 🎉
Nice dash of Worcester Sauce would have finished that off nicely. Also disguises any burnt bits. #KCACOLS
I do this with just toast and my favourite toaster trick is to leave the plastic packaging from the bread overhanging into toaster to melt and f**k up your lovely toaster! mummyfail or what! thanks for sharing #ablogginggoodtime
Oh yes my level cooking. Though I cant be arsed to watch it in the grill so I like to toast it then stick it in the microwave so it goes nice and soggy. My nan despairs of me. If I am feeling exotic I will put a dollop of pesto in the middle. Made me chuckle as always! #ablogginggoodtime
Hehehe I think I could top that. I once tried to ,she cheese on toast and didn’t toast the bread. So it was just melted cheese on warm slightly soggy bread. That’s got to be beta mum worthy? #ablogginggoodtime
