It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when an “evening off” consists of going to the supermarket ALONE, and worse still, rather enjoying it…
I hate taking my two boys to the supermarket. ย I avoid it whenever possible as it is inevitably a nightmare (see below, and I’ll give you a clue, I’m not referring to the first picture!)
A trip to the supermarket with the kids always displays the following features:
- Admirable resistance by Feral Child #2 againstย sitting in the trolley, complete with planking.
- Touching of EVERYTHING by Feral Child #1.
- Whinging for a Kinder Egg before we’ve even gotten to the end of Aisle 1
- Insistence by Feral Child #2 of putting everything into the trolley, resulting in cracked eggs, bruised apples, and dented milk bottles.
- A total spend far exceeding expectation, followed by the realisation back at home that you forgot most of what you actually went for.
My daughter is only six months but I remember as a child my mother used to lock us all in the car with the window cracked open like we were animals while she went to the supermarket. It’s only recently I’ve realised why. #Chucklemums
My mum used to do this too! Totally frowned upon these days of course, but seemed perfectly normal (if boring) back then!
I think you have seen into my life!! Absolute same feeling. Love supermarket alone time! !
Ha ha quite a few people have said that so I guess it’s a common feeling…! ๐
Pahahahaha yep. This is why I use Ocado.
As always, a triumph. You always make me laugh ๐
#chucklemums
Thanks Fran! I’ve really got to organise myself and try online shopping. It’s the thought of it taking ages the first time that’s been putting me off, but I should bite the bullet at some point…
*So funny, she commented twice*
Yep, I’m back for #KCACOLS. Hahah!
You are so frighteningly spot on! The next phase is both kids running around playing ‘it’ whilst shopping! I lurve super market shopping alone and rootling thru the reduced stuff – I’ll make a great pensioner!
Oh yes, gotta love the reduced section…! ๐
oh this is comedy gold. I had to share it on my Facebook page! just brilliant!
Oh thank you so much! ๐ xx
The supermarket counts as a cool night out don’t worry.
My life is pretty rock and roll these days, I must confess.
Hahaha, this is all so true. I love Beta-Mummy’s hair, it’s so frazzled. Bit like mine really!! Thanks so much for linking up with #chucklemums again! xx
Beta Mummy wishes she had time to use the hair straighteners every day, but alas it just doesn’t happen! ๐
Yep I get you, especially with the endless bottles of wine and alphabetti spaghetti! This is why I now order my food shopping online and get it delivered because there is less chance for a) over spending b) tantrums from kids or me c) negotiating the kids in and out of the car / trolley. #Chucklemums x
I definitely need to pull up my big girl pants and try online shopping. I will do it next week!
Oh, I *hate* taking my boys to the supermarket. I usually end up admonishing child 1 for running and jumping all over the place and dragging child 2 along me floor on his face by the reins. Awful experience. And I always lose the list in the car park on the way in somehow. #chucklemums
Ha ha, I do feel for you, but I must confess your comment did make me laugh! Thank you x
Brilliant as always! I’m with Fran, it’s Ocado every time for me. Life’s too short for supermarket shopping! #chucklemums
Well Ocado sent me a money off voucher so I guess I’d better try them… I hope it’s easy though or I’ll get pissed off.
If you can create a blog, shopping with Ocado is a piece of pi$$!
Yes, yes and bloody yes! Another excellent post #chucklemums
Cheers me dears ๐ x
Nailed it perfectly. Loving the pictures too. I got the whole way through the supermarket once and had a smug “Yey I got round the entire supermarket without any tantrums. Then my toddler bit baby’s finger and all hell broke loose whilst the checkout assistant flung my shopping towards me at a fast pace. I don’t go without company anymore ๐
Ha ha that made me laugh! Serves you right for daring to feel a bit smug…! ๐ x
The Beta Mummy doodle is brilliant! But strikingly familiar… have you been watching me? #chucklemums
I keep getting accused of spying on people…honestly I only have to look in the mirror! ๐
An insight into what I’m about to let myself in for – I’ve always disliked the idea of online shopping but I may change my mind once my 9 month old is old enough to “help”. Fab post #bloggerclubuk
Thank you, yes I’m rapidly coming to that conclusion…!
Love this – I am Beta Mummy! Unfortunately my husband is Alpha Mummy (Alpha Daddy?) and completely loves doing the food shop with toddler in tow, he makes it seem like a fun activity – what am I doing wrong?! #bloggerclubuk
Ah, “novelty Daddy syndrome” I like to call it! Anything that is stupid and boring with Mummy becomes exciting and fun when Daddy’s around…! ๐
you actually bring tears to my eyes – my husband just said “what are you laughing at?” – really too funny! #BloggerClubUK
๐ Thanks! ๐ x
Haha this was me yesterday! We had full on kinder egg tantrum and then I wasn’t looking Youngest went and nibbled all of the carrots and left tooth marks in them for the next customers! I was mortified and was trying to get Oldest to stop shouting about what Youngest had just done :-/ #bloggerclubuk
Ha ha that is brilliant! ๐
Love this! And totally agree! I love my alone time – that 10 mins it takes me to drive from pre-school where I’ve just dropped him off to my work place is the best 10mins of my day hahahaha #KCACOLS
I am with you there! Although it’s worrying how often I pull into the car park at work and realise I’m still singing along to the nursery rhymes CD…! ๐
OMG this is my life! My kids usually eat half of the shopping before we get to the till as well Haha #KCAKOLS
Ha ha yes – pre-kids I could never understand why mums in the supermarket would give their kids bit of French stick etc to munch on…and of course I thought to myself I’d never do that…ha ha ha ha ha ha ha…
Just popping back again to say I LOVE your doodles and when I went to the supermarket with my two yesterday I was reminded of your supermarket doodle so I didnt get stressed when they started having the usual tantrum I just had a chuckle instead. I think the other customers may have thought I was a bit bonkers though ๐ #KCACOLS
Oh I love this comment, thank you so much! It’s so nice to think that I’ve helped someone out a little, by giving them a giggle ๐ x
Hilarious doodles, I love them! I rarely go to the supermarket with my toddler and no other adult, it’s more trouble than it’s worth. #KCACOLS
Thank you! ๐ x
Bahahaahaha. Love your drawings! This week I also wrote a post about the joys of parenting in public… That was sarcasm by the way ๐
Thanks so much for linking up with #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday!

Thank you! I shall definitely check out your blog, that post sounds entertaining! ๐ x
And my Hubby wonders why my shopping trips are scheduled so that I NEVER have to bring the kids! Every so often I bring one to remind myself why I don’t bring them! #KCACOLS
Ha ha this is brilliant and so this the case with me and I only have one child!! I also try to avoid food shopping with him which normally means grabbing a meal at a time after work! Not ideal! Thank you for joining us at #BloggerClubUK hope to see you again this week x
I love the idea of going to supermarket alone, so many benefits! Before I had a baby I used to really enjoy browsing aisles for new things. Now it’s a mad dash hoping she’ll stay asleep! #KCACOLS
Yes I relate to this and love a supermarket trip on my own! Thanks for linking up to #justanotherlinky xx
totally get this! brilliant post thanks for joining #puddinglove x
Oh I dread it, the stress, the tension, the sympathetic looks…the off the scale LOUD singing of goosey goosey gander from the toddler. Ocado all the way #puddinglove
Oh lord we have just reached the stage where the eldest no longer fits in the trolley – I can’t bear it! I never get anything I went in for and it always ends in tears (usually mine) Its online shopping all the way here! Thanks for sharing #PuddingLove
I never remember the bags and often leave the list too. And my boys sneak all sorts into the trolley when I’m not looking. My two almost tipped the whole trolley over the other week standing on the side of it. Genius as always darling. TY for linking up to #FamilyFun ๐
Ahah, this is brilliant! Your trolley looks like I went shopping with you… Haribo and wine are my favourite ๐ #puddinglove
ahahaha this is awesome! I am not sure that I am looking forward to when bubba can talk!! She is really good at the supermarket at the moment but she gets a lot of attention… oh dear. Scared now!
#familyfun #puddinglove
[…] at this. I really WANT to be more organised, so that I actually remember lunch stuff when I do the weekly shop, and don’t have to scrabble around for suitable fodder. ย I really WANT my kids to be those […]
Oh I love your posts they never fail to make me laugh. All hail the beta mummy #familyfun xx
Ha ha, I stopped going to the supermarket when my baby was born and do it online now – the supermarket has always provoked flash points for me. I went the other day by mistake and ended up spending thirty quid more than usual. I almost cried #KCACOLS
We’re lucky that our 2yo is very well behaved in the store environment (aside from the needing to touch every price tag or promo signage). Shopping alone, I’m like the tazmanian devil. I go in, get what I need, and GET OUT! Very quick. Thanks for sharing #KCACOLS
It’s so funny the way kids hate shopping. It must be literally the most boring activity ever to them. Yesterday I popped into Topshop while mine was asleep in the buggy, then he woke up and I couldn’t get him out of there fast enough. We only have to look at a shop and he starts bawling! #KCACOLS #triballove
This made me chuckle! I have to say that I’ve been very lucky when going shopping with my two, but this definitely reminds of me of when I went with my sister and her two!
Laura xx
Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday ๐
Oh my goodness this is too funny! I absolutely loved it! This is me 100% at the grocery store especially when my little one is with me. I love the several bottles of wine ๐ And definitely appreciate you admitting to the alphabet spaghetti. Ours are Tyson chicken nuggests. #KCACOLS #TribalLove
Sarah
I am lucky that both of my kids are at school during the day,so I can shop then. Like you, I hated it when they were small, I dreaded it every week.
I love all of your doodles, they are brilliant.
#KCACOLS
I’m literally crying again – I LOVE IT! The chaos of Beta Mummy just makes me laugh so so much – alphabet spaghetti! Wine and more wine! No list, no bags! And Alpha mummy’s child asking for more aubergine – you know that’s my family don’t you??? x #KCACOLS
haha so true ๐ a night off at the supermarket is bliss! I love mooching up the aisles and taking my time. instead of throwing in pretty much what I can ๐ #KCACOLS
Priceless! Oh, I remember those days! I actually found out that Morrisons kept the trolley straps for the seats behind the customer services counter! Who knew?! Otherwise just take a massive roll of Gaffer tape…for hands, mouth and general fixing to trolley (Did I say that out loud?!) Thanks for sharing #KCACOLS
Love it! For the record bringing the Hubby is about as bad as bringing the kids! #KCACOLS
I LOVE going to the supermarket alone. Even if it’s just to pop in to get a handful of things while hubs waits in the car with my son. So much less stressful ๐ #kcacols
I love this in a sympathetic kind of way. I hate taking my kids to the store as well. Your description is definitely the more accurate of the two! #kcacols
A few weeks ago I went to Waitrose and all I bought was gin and chocolate. Meanwhile, my kids argued over a cup of ice chips that a pitying fishmonger gave them… Bad mummy.
Another vote for going to the supermarket alone of an evening! That actually sounds like bliss!
x Alice
#kcacols
This was well & truly hilarious and I’m so not looking forward to the supermarket special tantrum to come. Right now babe does amazingly well with tesco shopping and actually loves it and is only a small nuisance at the till trying to take everything off. Gosh, get those shops in while they have a bedtime!!!!
Forgot to add #KCACOLS !
2 words…online shopping! It is the stuff of ACTUAL dreams ๐ #KCACOLS xx
This makes me chuckle! Mind you I can say that now as mine is only a baby! xx
#TribalLove
#KCACOLS
One of the great joys in life is shopping without a child. I do my big shop online so I just have to do too ups with Mini R in tow….that in itself is painful enough. #KCACOLS
Haha, I always did the food shopping online when my son was younger! Now he’s in school I take my 2 year old daughter with me and, don’t hate me, it’s actually quite nice! I do keep her happy by feeding her kinders though, and she does like to the ‘drop everything in the trolley’ thing, trying to be helpful. x #KCACOLS
Love it! I try not to go shopping with the kids if I can help it, and do most online, but I used to rather enjoy it pre kiddies #KCACOLS
Love it, just got back from asda now and I really didn’t want to go with my two! X
Haha.. So funny & true! My girls make shopping a nightmare when we take them both!
